5 Best Hikes within 5 Hours of Cincinnati

Overlooking the New River from the Endless Wall Trail. Photo by Jared Musgrave.

Believe it or not; Cincinnati sits between some notable natural areas that are nationally, if not globally, recognized and praised. Due to Cincinnati’s picturesque placement at the confluence of the Ohio River, the city historically was known for river commerce and various manufactorings. Because of the city’s strategic placement and liveliness in the late 1800’s, it was often referred to as the “Queen City of the West”.

Jumping forward through the Industrial Revolution and emergence of natural area conservancy, Cincinnati’s strategic placement led it to being graced with numerous other accessible cities and parks.

As warmer weather approaches, many venture far from Cincinnati to go on vacation or experience scenic nature; not knowing that some of the most beautiful areas of the country are a short road trip away from the inner city.

Let’s dive into 5 of my favorite hikes within a 5 hour radius of Cincinnati. Yes, there are plenty of moderate hikes with gorgeous scenery EVEN CLOSER than an hours drive; but this is for those who are looking for a little more adventure to spice up their summer road trip.

5. Gunpowder Creek - Burlington, KY

6750 Sperti Ln, Burlington, KY 41005

Gunpowder Creek comes in at number 5 because of its accessibility. This is an easy day hike coming from the city and is surprisingly hidden in the middle of suburbia in Burlington, KY. So, you won't have to go far to reach the trailhead and have plenty of surrounding lunch options to wrap up your day. Parking is limited in the main lot so you may have to find street parking. The approach starts with a steep decline, which is easy to walk down, but you will definitely feel the burn coming back up. After following the trail down into a few switchbacks, your jaw will job at the beauty of the stretch of river you quickly approach. From there, you can follow Gunpowder Creek for a seemingly endless amount of time, but it does eventually connect to the Ohio River. The trail stops long before the river, but if you're adventurous enough to follow through downstream, you will be gifted with awesome swimming holes and small waterfalls. At a glance, this may be the cleanest stretch of river in the Northern Kentucky area.

4. Glen Helen Multi Trail Loop - Yellow Springs, OH

405 Corry Street, Inman Trail, Yellow Springs, OH 45387

Glen Helen is a nature preserve right outside of downtown Yellow Springs. The city of Yellow Springs is an absolute Ohio gem and, until recently, one of Ohio’s best kept secrets. You can easily spend the whole day hiking in the surrounding areas and exploring the various happenings of this quaint city and make it back to Cincinnati for dinner. You can also stay for the

night at a campsite or one of the various Bed and Breakfasts! The Glen Helen Multi Trail loop connects some of the best hikes. The loop trail is about 3 miles long and will take you along some gorgeous rock structures and waterfalls as the Little Miami River carves its way through the area. This hike is also very well known for bird watching and is a moderately / heavily trafficked area, so be prepared for other hikers. Also, due to the park almost shutting down due to a lack of funding, there is a $5 parking fee to help with donations and mitigate the amount of cars parked in the limited lots. A great day trip, or stay for the weekend if you want to fully explore the small city of Yellow Springs!

3. Highlands Nature Sanctuary - Fruitdale, Ohio

7660 Cave Rd, Bainbridge, OH 45612

A lot of people are surprised when told that Ohio has beautiful, natural attractions. Before heading west, try heading east; specifically to Fruitdale, Ohio. This area has yet to be overrun with tourists and is, in my opinion, Southern Ohio’s best kept secret (which was once Yellow Springs until famous comedian Dave Chappele moved to the area, thus shining national attention on this once hidden city). Only an hour and a half east from the city, you will begin to enter the beauty of the Appalachian Mountains. The area is home to a large Amish community and has deep Native American roots. There are loads of riverways perfect for kayaking, long hikes that loop upwards of 14 miles, and great climbing boulders. A perfect getaway for the city adventurer who is trying to get some serious sends in and really push their trail hiking experience.

2. Indian Staircase, Red River Gorge

3451 Sky Bridge Rd, Stanton, KY 40380

This would not be a legit list of Best Hikes in the area if it didn’t have at least one in Kentucky’s Red River Gorge, the crown jewel of the state. For those that are familiar, you know that the Gorge could have an extensive list of it’s own, but one if it’s most notable is Indian Staircase. Known for its near vertical rock scramble up it’s sandstone rock face, this hike will make you work for its beauty. The 3 mile loop takes longer than most hikes of that length due to the 643 feet of elevation gain, of which is mostly vertical with some heavy switchbacks at the start. The journey though is very much rewarded when you reach the top and are surrounded by one of the most unique views in the whole park. Atop of this horse shoe like rock structure that loops all the way around to other great hikes like Cloud Splitter, you will experience a vastness of beautiful treelines and distant sandstone. Bonus points if you go in the fall while the leaves are changing colors, a breathtaking spectacle.

1. Endless Wall Trail

Endless Wall Trail, Edmond, WV 25837

As the idea of what would be considered “the most beautiful” is subjective in any matter, I don’t think it’s up for debate that the New River Gorge holds the east coast title as it was just recently / finally recognized as a National Parking; making it America’s most recent National Park,

protecting it from ever being industrialized or developed. The New River being one of the oldest rivers on the continent and also a part of the long stretch of Appalachian Mountain, this is the furthest drive from Cincinnati, but easily roadtrip-able, clocking in at about 4.5 hours. In the heart of the park, trekking alongside the gorgeous new river, you will find the Endless Wall Trail. The trail is well-kept with numerous small bridges over creeks and some stairs down inclines. You can even climb down ladders to get to the bottom of the 300 foot cliff you are hiking along, which is great for rock climbers, of which you’ll see plenty of on this hike due to the world class sandstone rock face heavily sought after by any climbing enthusiast. As you exit the wetter areas and begin to enter the sea of sandstone boulders, you will eventually approach the most gorgeous overlook within driving distance from Cincinnati, a surreal gaze over the New River with a seemingly endless wall structure vectoring into the distance. From there, you will continue to walk along the ridge with nothing but panoramic beauty at all angles. This is a must do hike for those willing to go the extra mile.

-

As there are plenty of gorgeous hiking, climbing, kayaking, bird watching, adventure opportunities within a short radius of Cincinnati, these top 5 are sure to satisfy any nature enthusiasts or someone new to hiking, looking to get out of the city.

Mark Williams Auto Group Brings Real-World Automotive Experience to UC Students

Mark Williams Auto Group recently returned to the University of Cincinnati to spend time with a group of freshman business students and give them a closer look at what happens behind the scenes at a modern automotive dealership. Charlie Watson, Marketing Director for Mark Williams Auto Group, and Josh Williams, General Manager of Queen City Ford and Vice President of Mark Williams Auto Group, joined the students for an afternoon conversation centered around the automotive industry, dealership operations, marketing, technology, and the business decisions that help keep a dealership moving. For many students, a car dealership may simply be viewed as a place where people shop for vehicles and have them serviced. However, there is an entire business operation working behind the scenes. Charlie and Josh walked the students through the many departments and responsibilities that come together to create the dealership experience. The discussion covered everything from sales and service to marketing, customer communication, lead management, and the financial side of operating a dealership. The students also learned how different departments depend on one another and how collaboration plays an important role in serving customers. Technology was another major part of the conversation. With artificial intelligence continuing to develop at a rapid pace, the automotive industry is changing along with it. AI is already becoming part of dealership marketing, customer communication, lead management, data analysis, and everyday business operations. For students preparing to enter the business world, understanding how quickly industries can evolve is an important lesson. The automotive industry is no exception, and today's dealerships look very different from the dealerships of previous generations. The students were engaged throughout the visit, asking thoughtful questions and taking notes as Charlie and Josh shared examples from their own experiences in the automotive business. Their classroom discussion will now turn into a hands-on business exercise. As part of their coursework, the students are developing a SWOT analysis of Mark Williams Auto Group. They will examine the organization's strengths and weaknesses while also identifying potential opportunities and threats facing the business. The opportunity is valuable on both sides. Students get to apply concepts from the classroom to a real company, while Mark Williams Auto Group gets the chance to hear fresh perspectives from the next generation of business professionals. Mark Williams Auto Group appreciates the opportunity to return to the University of Cincinnati and connect with students who are beginning their business careers. We are excited to see their presentations and hear what they discover through their SWOT analysis.

Revving Up the Halloween Spirit: Mark Williams Auto Group’s Trunk or Treat!

Every fall, the Mark Williams Auto Group celebrates more than just the changing leaves and crisp air. We celebrate community. Our annual Trunk or Treat events at Mt. Orab and Beechmont have become beloved local traditions that bring families, organizations, and businesses together for a night filled with laughter, creativity, and kindness. At Mark Williams Auto Group, we believe in more than selling cars. We believe in driving community forward. Our dealerships serve as gathering places where people can connect, enjoy themselves, and strengthen the bonds that make southern Ohio such a special place to live. This year’s Trunk or Treat events once again proved how meaningful it is when local partners work together toward a shared purpose. A Family-Friendly Celebration From the moment the first trunk opened to the last piece of candy handed out, the atmosphere was filled with excitement and joy. Families arrived in creative costumes, ready to explore, take photos, and enjoy an evening designed for all ages. Every decorated vehicle and participating vendor added something special to the experience, turning our dealership lots into vibrant centers of Halloween fun. The Mt. Orab Fire Department and Mt. Orab Police Department joined us once again, giving children the chance to meet the heroes they look up to. Fire trucks and police vehicles were open for exploration, and the men and women who serve our community took time to answer questions and share safety tips. Their participation was an important reminder of how dedicated our local first responders are to protecting the people they serve. At Beechmont, the Union Township Fire Department brought that same community spirit. Families were thrilled to meet the team, explore their equipment, and thank them for all they do throughout the year. These first responders represent the heart of community service, and we were proud to have them join us. Local Businesses That Make a Difference Our Trunk or Treat celebrations would not be possible without the support of outstanding local partners. Ag-Pro of Georgetown joined our Mt. Orab event with an impressive John Deere tractor. Guests were fascinated by the tractor, and children enjoyed climbing aboard while learning how agriculture keeps our region strong. Ag-Pro embodies the hard work and dedication that define southern Ohio, and their presence helped show the connection between local business and community life. At both locations, the Cincinnati Ghostbusters were crowd favorites. Their movie-quality costumes and iconic Ecto-1 vehicle created an unforgettable photo opportunity. Guests of all ages loved their enthusiasm and attention to detail. The Ghostbusters have become well-known throughout the Cincinnati area for attending charitable events, and their participation at Trunk or Treat brought smiles to everyone they met. Charlie and his Haunted Trailer team delivered the perfect blend of spooky fun and family-friendly entertainment. Their creative haunted experience was one of the most popular parts of the evening, proving that Halloween thrills can be both exciting and accessible for all ages. We also want to thank the Brown County Animal Shelter and the Clermont County Animal Shelter for joining us. Their teams shared inspiring stories of animal rescue and adoption, encouraging visitors to consider giving a pet a forever home. Seeing families connected with these organizations was one of the most rewarding parts of the night. Sweet Treats and Local Flavor No community event is complete without good food and great coffee, and our Trunk or Treat celebrations were full of both. Travelin’ Tom’s Coffee Truck served handcrafted drinks that brought warmth and comfort to guests throughout the evening. Their locally brewed coffee has become a favorite among families in our area, and it was wonderful to have them share their passion once again. Kona Ice joined our Beechmont event with its signature shaved ice treats that delighted kids and adults alike. The cheerful colors and variety of flavors made their truck one of the busiest stops of the night. We also want to recognize Raising Cane’s and Quality Comfort and Home Services for their continued partnership. Their involvement and generosity help make our community events possible, and their commitment to customer care reflects the same values that guide our dealerships every day. Supporting Inclusion and Awareness EmPath for Autism played an important role in both our Trunk or Treat events this year. Their mission to support children with autism and their families aligns closely with our belief in creating events that are welcoming and inclusive for everyone. EmPath provided valuable resources and information to guests, helping raise awareness and promoting understanding within our community. Giving Thanks to Sam’s Club A heartfelt thank you goes to Sam’s Club for their generous support. Their donations of candy, supplies, and event materials helped make both the Mt. Orab and Beechmont Trunk or Treats a success. Their willingness to give back to the community is a reflection of true partnership, and we deeply appreciate their continued collaboration. A Night of Joy and Togetherness As the evening came to a close and the last trunk lights faded, one feeling remained: gratitude. Every smile, every laugh, and every handshake reminded us why community involvement matters so much. Our Trunk or Treat celebrations are about more than Halloween. They are about connections. They are about showing what can happen when local organizations, families, and businesses unite for a common purpose. At Mark Williams Auto Group, we are honored to play a part in that. Whether it is hosting community events, supporting local causes, or simply providing a welcoming space for neighbors to gather, we are dedicated to giving back. These celebrations reflect the values that drive us: service, kindness, and teamwork. We thank everyone who attended, volunteered, and partnered with us to make this year’s Trunk or Treat events so memorable. Your support continues to inspire us every day. We look forward to next year, when we can once again bring families together for another celebration of community spirit and togetherness across Mt. Orab, Beechmont, and beyond.

Fall in the Midwest holds a special kind of charm. The crispness in the air, the brilliant foliage, the return of flannel shirts, and the unmistakable scent of apple cider make this season feel nostalgic and new all at once. One of the best ways to embrace it is by visiting a local apple orchard. If you live in or around Cincinnati, you are in luck. The orchard features classic apple varieties like Fuji, Golden Delicious, and Jonathan. Visitors can pick their own apples in a relaxed and authentic setting. The drive itself, lined with changing leaves and peaceful countryside, makes the journey just as enjoyable as the destination. Once you arrive, grab a basket and wander through rows of mature apple trees. The on-site farm store is also worth a stop. You will find homemade jams, fresh-baked pies, apple cider, and the ever-popular cider slushies. The simplicity of A&M’s setup creates an experience that feels like stepping back in time. Iron’s Fruit Farm – Lebanon, Ohio Head northeast of Cincinnati to Iron’s Fruit Farm in Lebanon, just about 40 minutes from the city. This fourth-generation farm is a popular spot for families and offers much more than just apples. Beginning in early September, visitors can pick from a variety of apples depending on the timing of their trip. What makes Iron’s unique is its festive fall atmosphere. Besides the orchard, the farm features hayrides, corn mazes, a pumpkin patch, and hot apple fritters that are always in high demand. Tuken’s grows both classic and heirloom apple varieties, giving visitors the chance to try something beyond the usual supermarket fare. U-pick is typically available throughout September and October, depending on the year’s harvest. Its advanced all-wheel drive handles gravel and uneven surfaces easily, and the large cargo space ensures you have room for everything you decide to bring home. With your Jeep Compass packed and ready, it is easy to turn a quick apple stop into a relaxing escape. Tips for a Smooth Apple Picking Day To make the most of your trip, here are a few helpful reminders: Always check the orchard’s website or social media before heading out. Apple availability changes throughout the season. Wear comfortable shoes or boots. Fall weather often means wet or muddy orchards. Pack reusable bags or baskets, sunscreen, and a few wet wipes for sticky hands. Use your Jeep Compass’ power outlet to charge your phone or plug in a small speaker. Plus the available wireless charging pad helps keep your devices fully charged wherever your apple adventures take you!
